You have probably heard it said before, although it does not come up very often.
That is, that God has everything he needs and is filled.
So, what comes next is the question of whether God needs humans for anything.
The question in this post is this:
Does what you do add to God's happiness or disappointment? With a new year and a new beginning, many are likely wondering this in the back of their mind.
Here are some thoughts about what God expects from humans:
First of all, in Genesis 1:31 it says God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. In regard to humans, it was not just good, but very good.
God created humans out of love, aware of their imperfections. What did God want by doing this? It can be inferred that he wanted his Creation to come to him genuinely, out of the love he created it with.
God wants you to come to him, who has all the answers, is eternal and is full. Have you ever heard it said the King's Treasury is endless and it never depletes?
But wait.
That doesn't mean there is nothing expected on your end.
For example, would he have given humans things like the 10 Commandments if he didn't want you to follow them?
He also sent Prophets with messages to help guide you back to him.
He also wants you to spread the Good News of him to others. But does that mean that when you follow these things you are adding to God's happiness. Well, that is a deep theological question that is worth thinking about, but might not lead to tangible answers.
What is important is that God has a plan for your life and how you fit in the universe. He intervenes in your life where he sees fit, allowing you free choices along the way. He is not a tyrannical God, but one that wants what is best for you in the long term.
Since he has everything, it might be worth your time to follow what he has to say. Of course, that is easier to say than to do.
And, what about the other end? If you do things to disappoint yourself does that take away from God's happiness? That, too, is a deep theological question that should be looked at from God's perspective.
God does not look at things the way humans do. He does not view the people who don't follow him as less than those that do. Remember, he is omniscient.
He sees the potential in humans that fail. Humans, after all, were created in the image of God ( Genesis 1:27). He even knows the hairs on your head ( Luke 12:7, Matthew 10:30).
So, before you think you are disappointing God, remember why he created you and what he wants for you. An omniscient mind is much different than a human mind.
God is happy with you when you spend eternity with him. And, he has given you what you need to follow for that to happen.
Jesus did the work for you. That is the beauty of it.
