It is something I had become very aware of in my own experience: ever since I have had the iPhone 6 Plus, I am doing less reading of articles on my iPad. A survey now shows that I am not alone in the trading of platforms as I consume information.
According to the survey by Pocket, it is true that the larger screen iPhone 6 Plus allows us a richer experience to read and to watch videos, so that more of us are leaving the iPad home.
Specifically, this survey tells us that:
“The bigger your phone’s screen, the more you’ll read / watch as a whole. We saw that users with both an iPhone and an iPad consumed significantly more content as soon as they upgraded to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Those with the 6 now open 33% more articles and videos inside Pocket than they did with a 5/5S, and those with the 6 Plus open 65% more items than they did with a smaller phone.
“The bigger your phone is, the less you’re going to use your iPad. Users with an iPhone 6 now read on their tablets 19% less during the week and 27% less over the weekend. Those with a 6 Plus are on their tablets 31% less during the week and 36% less over the weekend.”
What this means for editors
I believe that the issue of frequency and updates will become more vital. Remember, our phones are usually more accessible and readily available than the iPads. This means that we will be coming back to the source of information more often to verify updates on stories we are following.
Secondly, and just as we had forecast in our predictions for 2015, video will play a greater and more important role.
