I’d like to call iOS 8 a simple routine maintenance update to iOS 7 from last year, because it didn’t excite me at all. Sure, it does come with improved notifications that lets you interact directly from banner alerts and the lock screen. A small update to Mail that lets you swipe to mark as unread, showing up suggestions when searching, new QuickType feature that learns what you type to make suggestions like on Swiftkey and “Hey, Siri” hands-free hotword activation for Siri. But, of course, if you’re familiar with Android, you’ll know that there’s nothing new or innovative here.

Apple has released the iOS 8 beta to developers and will make the OS available to all iOS users in Fall, probably along with the next-gen iPhone launch. Sorry to disappoint those guys waiting outside Apple stores, but I wouldn’t expect to see anything amazing from Apple this year.
