If you follow me, you know I like to start every year with a neuron drawing (mostly to remind myself how I got started). But this year I needed this more than ever. Blank ink on paper has always been my favorite way to soothe myself in times of uncertainty.
This month I have also been listening to The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer so while drawing these gently intertwining neurons I was also thinking a lot about her beautiful ecological metaphors for community and gift economies.
“This specialization to avoid scarcity has lead to a dazzling array of biodiversity, each species avoiding competition by being different. Diversity in ways of being is an antidote.”
And, as usual, William Morris prints and his political ideas are always a great source of inspiration. I love how neurons shapes connect and grow around each other, instead of competing against each other for space. Even at the microscopic scale cooperation and reciprocity are the natural order.
