A clinical nurse is a nurse who is practicing in a clinical institution, such as a hospital. A faculty member is a nurse who is employed by an academic institution to teach nursing. If considering a dual role as both a clinical nurse and a faculty member, a critical care nurse will want to acquire a significant amount of information about the nature of a faculty position, the requirements and responsibilities of faculty members, and the day-to-day realities of a dual role. As clinical nurses collect information, they will be comparing their interests and abilities with the varying aspects of the faculty role, deciding whether a dual role is the right role at the right time for them ( Figure 6 and Table 6 ).
