An auto accident at 2:30 a.m. last night first appeared to be only a car accident on Riverview Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri. A man and a woman were driving on Riverview Boulevard in north St. Louis when their car was sideswiped by a Chevrolet Silverado according to CBS/KMOX.
After the accident, the victims got out to assess the damage to their car and assess their own well-being. This is generally the first thing most of us do. Three men got of the Silverado truck and two of them had guns. The men proceeded to rob the man and woman. No doubt this came as a surprise to the victims. Immediately, when you are hit, you think you should get out and assess the damage—-seems like common sense, right? You must always determine if you or any of the other passengers are physically okay so that you can administer first aid and call emergency personnel.
As if a car wreck isn’t enough to worry about, you have to think about where you are and if it is wise to get out of your automobile. Generally, we always advise to get out of your car and be sure that you can get a safe distance away from the crash, especially if it occurs on a busy highway or interstate. Riverside Boulevard, at 2:30 a.m. on a Wednesday night/Thursday morning is not usually a high traffic area, but it would appear that it might be an area where robberies can occur. Of course, robberies can occur anywhere in the city or the country.
Thinking about being robbed or further victimized after an initial auto accident is still a valid concern. We don’t often read about victims being robbed after a car accident, but further injuries or accidents occurring after a crash are more common than you think. Often times I have blogged about victims of truck accidents and car accidents in St. Louis when someone’s car became disabled on the roadway or after an initial collision. The likelihood that you or your car will be hit after the crash is great increased if it occurs on a busy highway or interstate such as I-64/40, I-70, I-270 or I-44.
If you have to travel in areas or neighborhoods where you fear that a robbery might take place, try to travel during peak times. Sometimes, we just have no choice and we must drive in areas or neighborhoods where we would not walk. When that does happen, think carefully and be aware. Awareness assists many people in not becoming victims.
