One of the most famous read-it-later apps Instapaper has made its premium version free for everyone. All the premium features including unlimited notes, full-text search for article and speed reading are now open for everyone.
Instapaper was recently acquired by Pinterest and that is the reason Premium is now open for everyone. Instapaper team says that since they are now better resources they are able to give the best version of Instapaper (premium features) to everyone for free.
Interestingly, in the past Instapaper has tried various business model to tackle the same problem with user acquisition - free with ads, paid, free with optional subscription and was first sold to Betaworks and now to Pinterest. So by making it free how is Pinterest planning to keep it afloat without writing if off as non-sustainable business is a big question.
By making all the premium features free for everyone, Instapaper has now opened a very large audience of readers who used Pocket for their read-it-later purposes. Pocket is the only strong competitor with all the features Instapaper Premium provides, the only difference being Pocket was always free for everyone.
