Happy Monday!
If your eye be good, your whole body shall be full of light – Jesus Christ
1 billion years from today, what will you be doing? Seems like an outrageous question? Not really.
Children tend to do a few funny things and ask many more funny questions. A few hours ago, I was reading the creation story of the bible with my kids. And to illustrate to them what it was like before God created everything, I asked them to close their eyes. I asked them what they saw. Of cause they saw nothing and told me so. I said to them, “…that is darkness!”. Everything was dark before God created our world in Genesis. Pausing for a few seconds, my daughter asked me, “…but daddy, I had closed my eyes, so how did I see darkness? How does one see darkness”. Bless her heart. That is my dear daughter.
I also did a few funny things as a child as well. One of which was trying to run away from the moon. I thought if I ran fast or far enough, I could put some distance between myself and the moon. Of cause that was impossible. But I and my friends back then did not know that then. No matter how fast or far we ran, the moon was till up there in the sky above us. We were in kindergarten. We lacked the perspective to know that the relationship between the moon and the earth. We hadn’t been introduced to astronomy.
The issue of perspective brings to my mind the proverbial story of the blind men and the elephant. The blind man who felt the leg said the elephant is like a pillar; the one who felt the tail said the elephant is like a rope; the one who felt the trunk said the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who felt the ear said the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who felt the belly said the elephant is like a wall; and the one who felt the tusk said the elephant is like a solid pipe. Being unable to see the whole picture of what an elephant really is, their point of view became their true source of blindness in knowing what an elephant was.
So back to my question. What will you be doing 1 billion years from today? If you said you would be dead. I think that is not the whole picture. You see, I believe we will all live forever. The real question is where. Having this perspective changes everything for me. All we do or face on this side of eternity is but fuel for the real journey ahead. How prepared are you for 1 billion years from today?
Enjoy your week!
