Title: Hand Drum (damaru)
Date: 18th century
Location: Tibet
Artist: unknown
Type of art: mixed media
Note: Associated with the Hindu deity Shiva, Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists use the damaru in tantric practices. When they need to interrupt phrases of recitation to summon certain deities, Tibetan monks and shamans rotate the drum back and forth in their right hands, as the attached cloth beads strike the drum. One side of the drum represents male energy (Lingam) while the other stands for female creativity (Yoni).
