Indiana Blogs: Walking the Off-Beaten Path
Why did you start Walking the Off-Beaten Path?
I actually went to a Blog School sponsored by some Indiana Ag businesses to learn how to better promote Ag because that is what we do. We raise corn, soybeans, and feeder cattle. Steve and I are also on our county’s Farm Bureau board, and, as the PR person, I am learning how to better promote farmers and their lifestyles.
How long have you been writing Walking the Off-Beaten Path?
My first entry was July 13, 2010!
What are three of your favorite things?
I like our windmills. They show up in a lot of my farm pictures since we are surrounded by them. Here is a link showing how they went up: Walking Back One and Two Years Ago with Our Eyes to The Skies.
Of course I love my girls. I have tons of posts about them at school and here on the farm, but I think my favorite pics of them come from our spring break vacation at Daytona Beach: Sun Stroke!
And then I LOVE my new sunroom: A Week of Reveals.
What’s your favorite part of blogging?
Being able to share what a day in the life of a farmer is like. We really are not so different from other families, but many people do not understand what it is we do. The interaction between myself and my readers is very fulfilling and educational for all parties involved. It’s also like having 200 or so pen pals. Through the blog world you can learn about families, swap recipes, and just laugh and cry together.
And, one extra ‘cuz I’m curious–How do you like those windmills?
Now that they are up and running, I LOVE them! The construction phase was a bit trying because of deteriorating roads and watching incredible crops being plowed down so lines could be buried and access roads made. We were compensated for the crops, but it was still hard to watch.
Our roads are better and WIDER now that they have been re-built, but I will tell you the day they fixed the road right in front of our house was the same day we pulled back to our house to plant the field across the road. 365 days on the calendar and we all had to be at the same place at the same time!
There were too many big pieces of machinery trying to be at the same place at the same time.
What I like most about the windmills is that we are forward-thinking. Benton County was the first county in Indiana to have windmills, and my hope is that we made a solid investment in the conservation of energy for our children and generations to come.
