Why did you start Jean’s Boots?
As long as my spell check is functioning properly, I’ve always known I’m better at connecting with folks by writing words down rather than any other medium. Beginning a blog (my very first post went live July 14, 2010) seemed like the perfect starting place to share my life experiences with others.
My thought was to firstly see if I had enough entertaining stories from growing up barefoot, outside a sleepy old town with parents who made us eat liver and onions, no matter how much we gagged. I’ve learned that because of where and how I grew up, there is always something to share.
What about that name? Why Jean’s Boots?
My middle name is Jean, after my Grandmother who helped develop my strong roots in production agriculture. Many people call me Jean regularly.
Additionally, for years I’ve collected cowboy boots with a story behind them.
When I decided to start a blog, I knew that it was important to combine the two: Jeans and Boots. In every room in my home sits a pair of these “talking boots” that reveal stories of how I’ve been shaped into who I am today. Jean’s Boots truly have many stories to tell!

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
Honestly, it’s everyday life that keeps me writing, and it’s the ordinary things, like junk drawers and expiration dates, that keep this blog alive. I love taking a common component of living in small town America and illustrating it in a way everyone can relate to. Because really, if we can’t laugh about high electric bills and terrible family vacations, what can we laugh about?
I’ve not lived a fancy, long life traveling the world and finding new adventures; I’m in my mid-twenties, grew up on a farm and the only reason I own a passport is because I travel to Canada once a year to buy cows.
Many of my nights are spent on a porch swing swatting deer flies and listening to a Conway Twitty CD while writing about the hidden value of hotel soap. I’ve learned that those are the life experiences worth sharing. Blogging has become my stress relief, creative release and greatest way to appreciate what I have.
Now that we are more than halfway through the year–did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Have you kept them?
I made a resolution to lose 25 lbs. by August 1. I don’t know why, but no matter how much reduced-fat peanut butter, low-fat ranch dressing and diet coke I consume, pounds aren’t dropping like I anticipated. I’m an optimist by nature; there’s always 2012.
Another resolution of mine was to spend more time relaxing and recharging on my porch swing. While that was a tough resolution to keep between the months of January and April, since May I’ve been able to make more of a conscious effort.
What matters to you?
What matters to me, while blogging and in life, is building something worth leaving behind. When I began writing publicly, I wanted to ensure the content was worth the time folks would take to sit down and read it. Since day one I’ve modeled Jean’s Boots after the way I live my life: simple and with great purpose. And with humor. And of course, with lots and lots of cowboy boots…

One of my passions is meeting new folks and learning about the path people have taken to get to where they are today. I look forward to getting to know little Indiana’s readers.
