Indiana Blogs: Grey Barn Stories
Grey Barn Stories is an Indiana blog that lets you experience small town life up close and personal. An avid photographer, she’s right there capturing it all–big events or small.
The post about her daughter’s wedding anniversary? Just about moved me to tears. Step into her small town life. Just know that once you do? You won’t want to leave.
Indiana Blogs: Grey Barn Stories
Why did you start Grey Barn Stories?
In 2003, I wrote letters to each of my three children on their birthdays. Much to their chagrin, I was able to post them on the internet via iWeb and my shiny new Apple computer.
In June 2012 Apple will no longer be hosting websites so I started Grey Barn Stories to keep my internet Journal alive. Journaling (I don’t like the word blogging) is my drug of choice.
Why Grey Barn Stories? Is this barn for real?
After a 34 year stint in Michigan, I (we) moved back to my hometown of Remington to help my parents with all the work that comes from “keeping the farm in the family.” Most of my stories come from deep inside my little ‘ole farm girl heart.
Yup the barn is for real. My grandfather built it to house a dairy cattle herd. My dad milked cows until I was 5 years old, and I remember feeling sad and lonely as the last black and white holstein climbed the ramp into the truck that carried them off to Iowa.
We still refer to the “day we sold the herd.” The barn will celebrate it’s 100th birthday in 2018.
You are a photographer in a small Indiana town–have you always been a shutterbug?
I’ve had some kind of camera in my hand since I can remember. People say I have a good eye, but I say I have a good camera. I love to tell stories with pictures, and my blog entries are mostly accompanied by a photograph or two.
What I really want is to write a novel (and illustrate it with my own photographs) about a small town girl who leaves home only to return 34 years later to find all of life’s questions are only answered when she returns home. Sound familiar?
Oh and I really, really, really want to shoot at a small town wedding (with a camera, of course.)
What are three of your most favorite posts?
Ouch. You know how to ask the tough questions, don’t you?
My favorite thing to write about is my childhood, my children’s childhood and I love to write about my faith and the journey. Here’s a sample of each with a bonus post because I don’t like to play by the rules.
Note: All posts are linked from my old iWeb journal so they don’t really back link to Grey Barn Stories, dang it all anyhow. Someone said I should repost all the archives in blogger, but I’m holding out hope that someone will invent an app for this, and it won’t be called copy and paste.
Stage Presence – Names changed to protect the innocent.
Imani – A story of hope and Africa.
Lost And Found – Faith reintroduced.
Dear Max & Lilly: Letters to my first two grandchildren born 4 days apart in March 2011.
What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
I write to remember and to pass the stories on to my children and their children.
Do you have a life motto?
“That’s What I Thought”
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
“The Great American Novelist” would be my title and my power would be time travel.
Time Traveling Award Winner?
