Troll or Derby by Indiana Author Red Tash
I had the great good fortune to get my hands on a copy of Indiana author Red Tash’s latest fantasy novel: Troll or Derby.
The author’s name, Red Tash, may seem familiar to you. She’s been a Featured Blogger on little Indiana.
Indiana Author: Troll or Derby by Red Tash
I wasn’t sure what to think when I read the back cover. I mean, trolls, fairies, pixies, and roller derby? I don’t know anything about…well, any of those things!
But that doesn’t even matter. What you don’t know you’ll soon figure out! Tash crafts a world that’s so compelling, you can’t help but get sucked in!
In this world, trolls and fairies aren’t just real, they are living among us.
On my way to the Wabash Cannonball Chili Cook-off, I read my little heart out. I only stopped twice: when Kid #2 got carsick. Hubs and I have Kid #2 clean-up down to a science so, before you could whisper “trolls and fairies” we were off and I was back into the book. Oh, yes. I am a trooper.
I love the way she weaves in a bit of Indiana in the story as well. It only adds to the fun!
Here’s the story as taken off the back of Troll or Derby (so I don’t accidentally give anything away!):
In TROLL OR DERBY, fifteen year old Roller Deb is singled out by town bullies for both her skates, and for being different. When her popular homecoming queen of a sister is kidnapped by a scuzzy drug dealer, Deb must flee the trailer park in which she’s grown up, and rescue her.
Along the way, Deb becomes enmeshed in the magical realm of trolls and fairies, and the blood-thirsty version of roller derby at which these beings excel. But spending too much time among the fairies comes with a price.
Will Deb choose to save her sister, with the aid of a mysterious troll? Or will she be lost to the lures of roller derby, and the blonde temptress April, forever?

It’s gritty. It’s dark. I loved it! In fact, I passed it along to hubs and he loved it, too–and we differ greatly in our reading choices! I guess that’s what happens when you combine careful writing with a quick reading style and a healthy helping of our familiar Hoosier landscape. It’s hard to put down!
