How are you planning to spend this Republic Day?
Today I bring to you a India Republic day craft for kids. This is one of the simple craft ideas for toddlers aged 2 and above.
The significance of Republic Day:January 26 th, is a day when our patriotism levels are at an all time high. It is the day that our nation commemorates the date on which the constitution of India came into effect and the country became a republic. This year we are celebrating our 67 th republic day and if you have the day off, you should watch the republic day parade on Doordarshan (yes, it is still around) with your family. It showcases the various aspects of our country like arts, crafts, defence etc.
After that why not schedule a little parade of your own? A small show and tell parade with finger puppets of our national animals will surely delight your kiddos and educate them about our national symbols in a fun way.
India Republic day craft for kids in the form of National animals:
I have taken 4 such VIPs who have national importance for my show and tell. They are the tiger (national animal), peacock (national bird) and king cobra (national reptile), elephant (national heritage animal). Since I can't get the animals home, I have decided to make some very easy finger puppets.
#1. TigerTiger, the lord of the jungles is the National animal of India.
Materials Required- Colored paper - orange, black and white.
- Scale
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sketch pen - black
Fold the orange paper in half; roughly trace your finger on it. Draw a darker line that is 2 cm more than the outline of your finger.
Cut it out, so you have two shapes those are slightly bigger than your finger. This is for the body of the tiger. Next draw two ears on the orange sheet and cut it out, cut two more ears on the white paper that are smaller than the orange ones. Stick the white ear shaped pieces on the orange ones.
Apply a thin line of glue on the outer edge of one of the orange pieces. Stick the ears on the body. Stick the other orange piece leaving the base portion open ensuring that you have enough space to put your finger in later.
Draw an oval shape on the white paper, this is the tummy of the tiger. Stick this on the body. Draw the mouth of the tiger on the white paper, cut and stick this on the face of the tiger as shown in the photo.
Cut stripes from black paper and stick it on the body.
Draw the eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers. Your tiger finger puppet is ready..
#2. PeacockThe majestic multi-hued bird peacock is the national bird of India.
Materials required ProcedureDraw the body of the peacock on the blue paper like you did for the tiger, but here make sure to leave a margin of 2.5 cm than the size of your finger. Cut it out.
Next we need to make the tail feathers, for that, cut out a green semi- circle with scalloped edges like shown in the picture. Cut out a blue semi semi-circle with scalloped edges that are smaller than the green one (refer the picture). Cut one more green semi- circle which is the smallest of the three. Cut small blue oval shapes (like the ones shown in the image) to stick on the outer edge of the tail.
Stick the scalloped semi circles together as shown in the image. Now stick the small oval shaped pieces on the outmost part of the tail (refer image). Stick the two pieces meant for the body together, like you did for the tiger. Stick this on the tail. Draw the eyes and beak. Your peacock finger puppet is ready.Note: When you leave this puppet to dry, leave a pencil inside so it is easy for you to slide your finger in.
#3. ElephantThe largest land animal, Elephant is the National heritage animal of India.
Materials required ProcedureDraw the body of the elephant on the folded black chart paper and cut it out. Ensure that there is a margin of 2.5 cm than the size of your finger.
Next draw 2 sets of ears, one black and the other white, the black one has to be bigger than the white set.
Cut out the trunk, eyes and tusks as shown in the diagram. Stick the white ears inside the black ears.
Apply a thin line of glue on the edge of one of the pieces that you will be using as the body leaving the base portion open for the finger. Stick the ears and the other body piece.
Stick the tusks under the trunk and stick it on the body. Stick and color the eyes and you are done!
#4. King CobraKing cobra is the National Reptile of India.
Materials required- Colored paper - black and white
- Scale
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sketch pen - black
- Pipe cleaner or chenille stem- black
Fold the black paper in half and trace the outline of your finger on it leaving a margin of 2.5 cm from the actual outline. Modify it into the shape of a hood and cut it out (refer photo).
Stick the two hood portions together by applying a thin line of glue along the inner sides leaving the base portion open for the finger. Cut a rectangular shape from the white paper and stick it on the hood as shown.
Next we need to cut out the mouth and the forked tongue. (Refer photo).
Cut rectangular shapes and stick along the outer edge of the white rectangle. These are the king cobra's bands. Stick the mouth and tongue.
Coil the chenille stem and paste one end on the back portion of the hood.
Cut two small circles for the eyes and stick and draw the pupils.
Hssss...your snake is ready.
How to do the Republic day craft DIY National Animals show and tell? The show and tell must be age appropriate. For the little ones you can just introduce these animals and include them in a story. A story about how the four went to Delhi to see the republic day parade will be a great story. Feel free to add as many elements like the sound and color of these animals.
For the slightly older kids, you can add more details as to why these animals were chosen. Make into a game where they have to find out the significance of each animal, the places where they are found and the conservation status.
