Tragic Head-On Crash Kills Two, Injures Two in Illinois
Two young women have died after a head-on crash last Saturday night, January 10, 2015 at around 10:30 p.m. in Monroe County. The crash occurred on Highway 159 between Hecker and Red Bud according to the Illinois State Police.
A 19 year-old Ruma, IL woman and a 20 year-old Red Bud, IL died after the car they were in was struck by an oncoming car that crossed the center line. The Ruma, IL woman was driving and the Red Bud woman was a back seat passenger. A front seat passenger, survived as did the driver of the other car, a Chevrolet Aveo.
The two fatality victims were in a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt that was heading south on Highway 159 when a 20 year-old Red Bud, IL woman’s car crossed the center line and struck the Cobalt. The driver of the Aveo was thrown from the vehicle and was taken by medical helicopter to a St. Louis hospital and listed in serious but stable condition. Occupants in the Chevrolet Cobalt, included three young women. The 19 year-old fatality victim was a student at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville and the 20 year-old Red Bud woman was a Red Bud High School 2013 graduate and both worked at Randolph County YMCA.
The third occupant and only surviving victim in the Cobalt was another 20 year-old Red Bud woman taken to Belleville Hospital with minor injuries according to news reports. Police say they do not know why the Aveo crossed the center line and an accident-reconstruction team is investigating. Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye said Monday that alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor in the crash which remains under investigation.
Head-On Collision in Missouri-Same Weekend
