Homebody – Deep Time // Buy

I first heard about Deep Time (@deep_time) during an interview with Wild Flag’s Carrie Brownstein conducted by Ira Glass’ wife, Anaheed Alani (and who on Earth wouldn’t trust a recommendation from that gang?). They’re a two-piece band, guy and girl, from Austin, Texas with a seriously cool sound.

It took me a few listens to dissect the band’s style enough to understand and appreciate it. The songs are very intelligently constructed, and they seem to come from left field — their broken, angular melodies don’t really fit in with those of contemporary alt rock. In this case, though, the atypical form of the music leads to dangerously catchy hooks that may bring about a full-on Deep Time addiction. I often go for a week or two without listening only to find a refrain of theirs suddenly looping persistently in my head. To be honest, that’s fine by me, because the duo is no doubt in the business of making modest, non-cheesy feel-good music.

Deep Time’s first album under their current moniker (they were previously known as YellowFever), a self-titled LP, is out on Hardly Art. It’s a quick and entertaining listen. Download my favorite track from the album, “Homebody,” above, and check out their video for “Clouds” below:
