Don't be afraid to write a tentative introduction first and then change it later. Some people find that they need to write some kind of introduction in order to get the writing process started. That's fine, but if you are one of those people, be sure to return to your initial introduction later and rewrite if necessary.

Understand the purpose of a thesis statement. A thesis statement appears at the end of the introductory paragraph. It is a specific, one-sentence summary of the topic for your paper and your point of view about that topic. The body of your paper will work to support the thesis statement. This sentence creates a focus for your paper, so that you do not add any unnecessary information. Also, the thesis offers the reader concise information on the point of view of the complete essay.

Start by thinking about the question (or questions) you are trying to answer. Your entire essay will be a response to this question, and your introduction is the first step toward that end. Your direct answer to the assigned question will be your thesis, and your thesis will likely be included in your introduction, so it is a good idea to use the question as a jumping off point. The thesis statement is the subject of much instruction and training. The entirety of your paper hangs on that sentence, which is generally the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.

First impressions are so important. How many times have you heard that? It is true that the first impression-whether it's a first meeting with a person or the first sentence of a paper-sets the stage for a lasting opinion.

Edit your introduction and thesis as you write. Because ideas develop, change, and grow as you work with them, keep returning to your introductory paragraph and thesis. Edit them as you write your essay. By the end of your paper, be certain that the content of your introduction and thesis statement matches the overall message of your essay.

If surveillance is a normal aspect of the management and governance of modern life, then what's wrong with it? Using surveillance to achieve one's aims, no matter how grand or how miniscule, bestows great power. And to label a phenomenon as 'surveillant' involves acknowledging that information processing which takes place as part of governance or management never takes place on a level playing field. Some interests will be served, while others will be marginalised. Some will receive benefits and entitlements, while others will not. Surveillance coalesces in places where power accumulates, underpinning and enhancing the activities of those who rule and govern.

Use techniques in your introduction to attract the audience's attention. There are many options for capturing the interest of your reader in the introductory paragraph. Share an anecdote (a personalized story), find a relevant quotation or make a controversial and surprising statement about the topic. Be creative in order to engage your audience.
