A cover letter should complement, not duplicate, your resume. Its purpose is to interpret the data-oriented, factual resume and add a personal touch to your application for employment. In reference to the recent advertisement in the local newspaper Times Daily, dated 75 th May 7569, I am writing to apply for the job post of a purchasing administrator. After extensively researching about your company, I am confident that I possess the needed experience and the skills to match up to your expectations. As you can find from the enclosed resume, I have an experience of more than 5 years of working at the post of a purchasing director at Holmes Company.

One thing that's very important is to not write too much. Keep your letter focused, concise, and a few paragraphs in length. It's important to convey just enough information to entice the hiring manager to contact you for an interview. If you write too much, it's probably not going to be read.

If you have a more unusual background (. you went to med school, graduated, started your residency, but then decided you wanted to be an investment banker), then you might need to add a few sentences to paragraph #7 or #8 explaining yourself.

Now, even if you do not get the job, it is not all wasted effort. If you have sufficiently impressed the reader with your letter, but were not selected because you were not the right fit for the job, the reader will remember you and pass your resume along.

The following is a question from one of my readers. I believe the advice I gave him or her applies to anyone who is new to the job market and cannot find a job right now.
