How to Wear Mustard Yellow This FallIf you have been in the stores shopping for fall fashion then you know that the colors that were around in the 1990's are back with a vengeance. Seriously, if you were to pull out all the colors I wore back then they would be exactly what is being shown now. One of these colors that is back in a big way is mustard yellow, a spicy, somewhat muted, earthy shade. The bad news is that it's not a great color for everyone to wear, but, the good news is that there are so many ways to wear it that, no matter how you look in the color, there are plenty of ways to wear it without it ever being near your face. In today's post, I am giving my tips on how to wear mustard yellow no matter what type of coloring you have.

With all the burgundy that is in the stores this fall, mustard is the perfect complement to such a rich autumnal shade. Here, I used this mustard yellow pencil skirt from J. Crew that I love because it introduces a basic skirt in a color that can really change things up while still being professional. I paired it with this chambray button down shirt from Topshop. However, you could also style the skirt with a basic white, navy, black or brown top and still look great. The richness of the burgundy pumps from Charles by Charles David really anchors the look and the scarf from Pendleton finishes the outfit by pulling all the colors together. Lastly, the outfit is accessorized with a grey bag from Longchamp and Amethyst glass necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane.

If you are looking to add a colorful fall handbag to your wardrobe consider a mustard shade. This is a purse color that will get you a surprising amount of use because it works with so many colors. I love the way mustard, like this handbag from Lauren Ralph Lauren, works with teal and deep turquoise shades, like this wool coat from Zara. Other colors that works well with mustard is navy and charcoal. I created this clean work look using these pants from Theory and V-neck sweater from French Connection. The outfit is finished with a printed Modena scarf and tassel pendant from Bauble Bar.

While you might want to go and grab a basic dress in a neutral color, often colorful ones can get just as much use because they can add some brightness to your wardrobe while also allowing you to have something to wear with cardigans and blazers in neutral shades.

In the outfit above, for example, this mustard yellow dress from Boden works with this knit blazer from Miss Selfridge and the look is finished with grey tights, black booties from from Ivanka Trump, a black necklace from Kendra Scott, handbag from Talbot's and silver bracelet from Robert Lee Morris.

If you can wear a sweater in a rusty color like in this one from J. Crew, that has been paired with a soft grey tank from Theory and boyfriend jeans, then you can likely wear a scarf in mustard yellow, like this one from Nordstrom, which looks beautiful combined with all shades of rusts and deep orange colors. To give this casual look a chic finish, I styled the outfit with a pair of printed flats from Nine West and layered gold necklace.

Working on this post, I couldn't help but think of a client of mine who has an executive position for Caterpillar, a company known for their big yellow machines. In fact, it's encouraged for employees to embrace the iconic color of the company. I remember working with her and knew she needed yellow pumps. It wasn't just because of the company that she works for that made me feel this way, I knew that a pair of shoes in this color would be so useful.

Like handbags, you would be amazed by how a pair of shoes in yellow, like flats or heels, can add some simple punch to basic looks. In the look above, I added this pair from Sole Society to a more muted look consisting of a pair of tattersall pants from BOSS Hugo Boss, a dusty blue top from Reiss that has been styled with this ivory blazer from Theory. The outfit is finished with the same grey bag as used earlier and abalone earrings.

Whether in large or small doses, you can add mustard yellow to your wardrobe. Give it a try. It might surprise you how much works with it.
