Needing to buy some new workout clothes, I purchased a mustard yellow tank top. I got tons of compliments on the color when I was at the gym. Of course, being a redhead by way of the bottle, I jokingly said that mustard yellow belongs on redheads or in a diaper.
It might be one of those situations similar to when you buy a car and then see that same car everywhere, but since buying this tank top for workouts, I have seen people wearing the mustard yellow everywhere. Certainly, my comment about mustard only working on redheads and in diapers was me being jokingly hyperbolic and there are plenty of people who can wear this emerging shade. Even better, if you missed my post on how to wear these warm types of autumnal shades if they don’t work for you, you can check out my post here.
How to Wear Mustard Yellow
Here are five mustard yellow outfits to give you some ideas and inspiration.
Outfit #1
For those who can wear mustard yellow near the face, I love combining this color with burgundy. I added this cardigan from Halogen with this top, and styled it with these subtle plaid ponte pants from Wit & Wisdom. I finished the look with burgundy boots from Bos. & Co., navy carryall from Clare V., and pendant from Caputo & Co..
Outfit #2
Mustard yellow isn’t just a color that looks good on people who can wear the color equivalent of a pile of autumn leaves. If the color is vibrant and clear enough, it can work on a variety of skin tones and really add a pop to a look.
Here, I styled the color with all black by pairing this mustard yellow coat from Topshop with a fringe sweater from Elie Tahari, faux leather leggings from Spanx, a pair of black booties from Treasure & Bond, hoop earrings from Gorjana and black crossbody from See by Chloé.
Outfit #3
Mustard yellow may not be a good face color for everyone but it is a universally perfect pop color for accessories. I love my Editor flat slingbacks from Everlane in mustard for this reason.
In the outfit above, I styled these mustard yellow mules from Steve Madden with a pair of slim ankle pants from J. Crew in dark hunter and an ivory sweater from Madewell. I finished the outfit with an Everlane bag in dark green and simple necklace from Madewell.
Outfit #4
WhatI love about mustard accessories is you don’t even have to be wearing warm colors for a mustard shade to pop in nicely. Here, I added this mustard bag/backpack hybrid bag from Antik Kraft to an outfit of cool colors. I styled this gray blazer from Bailey 44 with a charmeuse tank from Lafayette 148 and navy pants from BOSS Hugo Boss. I finished the outfit with gray pumps from Botkier and a silver pendant from Chico’s.
Outfit #5
This last look really leans into mustard yellow by styling this cardigan from Eileen Fisher with deep olive skinny jeans from Madewell, and ivory t-shirt from Everlane. I finished the look with rusty red flats from Evolve and bag from Rebecca Minkoff, and this beaded necklace that picks up the shades of the look.
