I’m a big fan of wearing metallic shoes in the summer. I stumbled on this revelation quite by accident after purchasing a pair of gold glittery ballerina flats from Zara about 13 years ago. I wound up loving the way they not only worked with everything but added some fun to my basic outfits. Since then, I have consistently had a pair of gold summer shoes in my closet ever since.

If you haven’t added a pair of metallic summer shoes to your wardrobe, you are missing out. Check out today’s post to get some styling ideas and shop for additional styles at the end of the post.

Metallic shoes are quintessential novelty basics. When in doubt a pair of metallic shoes will work with any color while also adding some excitement to your looks.

In this outfit, I styled these gold metallic Sam Edelman strappy block heel sandals with a teal jumpsuit from Leith. I finished the look with a floral handbag from Ted Baker and multi-strand necklace from Karine Sultan.

In this next look, I styled these metallic sneakers from UGG with a pair of boyfriend chinos from Caslon, a chicory colored cotton-linen tunic from Eileen Fisher, printed scarf from Nordstrom, soft orange bag from Vince Camuto and wood earrings from Marida Bay.

You want to tread lightly wearing metallic shoes to work. In highly professional situations, they should either be avoided or in metallic shades that are very muted, like this pair from Marc Fisher that I styled with this plaid dress from BOSS Hugo Boss, a white shaped blazer from Iro. I finished the outfit with a taupe bag from Nordstrom and drop earrings from Majorica. For work, you want to avoid sequin or glittery metallics. Muted leather is the best way to go.

The decision to choose gold or silver metallic shoes typically depends on personal preference and the shades in a wardrobe. It’s not a rule, but, typically, cooler colors look good with silver metallic shoes and warmer colors look better with gold metallic. Some women prefer to have both colors in their wardrobes and others have either silver or gold. The choice is totally yours.

I styled this bright summer dress from Cos with a pair of silver metallic wedge sandals and, for arm coverage, added this white shrug. I finished the look with a green handbag from Rebecca Minkoff and soft pink earrings from Bauble Bar.

Layers can be cumbersome in the summer, making metallic shoes an easy way to add a pop to a look without overheating. You can add a pair of metallic shoes to a simple look and, bam, it looks finished.

I styled this classic Breton and white cropped jeans from Madewell with a pair of gold ballerina flats from Linea Paolo and red Longchamp bag from Neiman Marcus Last Call.
