Opaque tights can certainly add a nice thick layer to your legs when you need to wear skirts on cold days, but, after a while, choosing black and brown tights can sure get boring. You see colorful tights in the stores and know that they can offer some excitement and interest to your winter looks, however, how to wear them exactly isn't exactly clear. How do you wear colorful tights without looking like a clown? Wondering what color shoes to wear is too confusing and, while not exactly thrilling, your trusted black and brown pairs are a lot easier.

If you have been thinking about giving colorful tights a try, but don't know how, check out these five different looks using them to give you some tips and inspiration.

Choosing a pair of tights in olive is an easy way to dip a little toe into the water of colorful tights. Olive is a neutral so they're still understated. This color will look great outfits in colors like camel, navy, brown, and they'll even work with black. I love the way this olive pair from Spanx works beautifully with this deep rouge dress from Reiss. Working with the palette, I added these taupe boots from Calvin Klein, but chocolate brown shoes or boots would work equally well, and finished the outfit with a navy blazer from J. Crew, burgundy bag from Longchamp and blush necklace from Kate Spade.

In this outfit, I used these teal colored tights from Wolford to add some excitement to this navy tunic dress from Boden. Teal can be a very versatile color but, if your goal is to keep the outfit more toned down, choose neutral clothing to wear with this color and don't create too many focal points in addition to the tights. For the rest of the look, I added these boots from Frye and bag from Vince Camuto in cognac and accessorized with this colorful scarf from Jules Smith and bold earrings from Stella & Dot.

Burgundy tights can be an easy addition to most wardrobes. I find I wear mine a lot. You can wear them with just about any neutral color and, like olive tights, they offer excitement while being understated. In this outfit, I styled this burgundy pair with a tan a-line skirt from Miss Selfridge and short sleeve cashmere sweater from Theory. I finished the look with brown heeled booties from Michael Michael Kors, a soft blue bag from Brahmin, labradorite drop earrings from Meg Carter and charm bracelet from LOFT.

Yellow tights definitely make a statement, but they can also be surprisingly versatile too. I think they are better for casual than for work, however, it really is personal preference. In this outfit, I added this yellow pair to a brown a-line mini from Zara and grey crewneck sweater from J. Crew. To finish the outfit I used these brown moto booties from American Rag, casual bag from Macy's, burgundy scarf from Steve Madden and Citron colored drop earrings.

Bright red tights can be tricky to wear, however, I really liked this deep ruby pair. They're not as dark as burgundy but not as unwearable as a true red. To tone down the tights, I styled them with this grey sheath dress from Modcloth and grey suede wedge pumps from Calvin Klein. The outfit is finished with a soft blue cardigan, that complements the color of the tights, and used the same burgundy Longchamp bag as used in the first outfit and added these simple grey studs from Max & Chloe.

If your winter wardrobe feels like it needs a boost, try using some colorful tights to add some functional style to your cold weather looks.
