How to Wear a Cardigan

The cardigan may just be the quintessential fashion item of the season.  There aren’t many outfits that won’t look good with a cardigan!  That being said, this doesn’t mean that everyone knows how to wear a cardigan.  There are several key aspects of cardigan know how that you want to keep in mind when shopping for and wearing a cardigan.

  • Purchasing a solid colored cardigan will be best if you plan to wear a few cardigans with as many outfit combinations as possible.  At minimum, you can probably get along with two solid colored cardigans and one printed cardigan for  an entire year’s worth of outfit combinations (wearing the cardigan in conjunction with other items)
  • A cardigan’s color should be a color that looks good with your skin’s undertones and that is also complimentary to most of the other pieces in your wardrobe.
  • Find a cardigan that fits you.  This means that is it slimmer fitting, definitely not baggy, loose or boxy looking.

  • Leaving the buttons undone is a great option, but buttoning a few buttons can strategically make you look thinner.

  • Buttoning the button that lines up with the thinnest part of your waist and one or two below that height is a way to draw the attention to the thinnest part of your body.  This strategy creates a sort of empire waist, allowing you to emphasize your figure

  • Never tie your cardigan around your waist if you remove it.  This adds unnecessary bulk to your hip area, which is never good.

I have a serious preference for three-quarter length sleeved cardigans.  I think it is because they are relatively seasonless.  You can wear them in the spring and summer, and I still like to wear them in the winter months.  The way the sleeve length hits your mid forearm makes your arms look thinner.
