I had the best of intentions to recreate another old sweater I had, using this how-to with this sequined “brave” lettered diy, but I didn’t like how my font turned out. Instead, I improvised with a pile of pillows laying in the attic that needed some updating. Cable knit and wool aren’t just for wearing, I love a cable knit sweater throw blanket for chilly nights, but I also love the fabric on pillows. It adds a softness in the home during this season, especially when in lighter colors. There really are endless ways you can repurpose sweaters. I used a printed light olive-green and lavender pillow that had a plaid print on one side, and paisley on the other. Since I’m not a paisley print fan, I thought the tan knit sweater would be a great pair to the soft colored plaid print on the other side. A pretty color combination for fall!
I also love a good tassel, who doesn’t! So, I added a white tassel trim to the edge of my sweater. Not only does a trim neatly cover up the messy edge of your sweater and glue marks, it also adds a unique touch to your pillow creation. Here’s how to repurpose a cable knit sweater into a new pillow to cozy up with these upcoming cold nights…
You’ll Need:
- Cable Knit Sweater
- Accent Pillow
- Tassel Trim {sized to fit perimeter of pillow}
- Scissor
- Fabric glue
- Needle and thread
Place the glue carefully around the edge of the pillow, as close to the seam without placing any directly on the already existing seam. I found it best to do this about 2 inches at a time.
Carefully place the edge of the sweater onto the glue, stretching to fit it as close to the edge of the seam as possible. Press firmly to adhere.Continue this step around all four edges of the pillow. Allow to dry slightly, about 30 minutes.To attach the trim, place the glue carefully around the edge of the sweater side, as close to the seam without placing it directly on the already existing seam, {just like you’ve done in the steps above when attaching the sweater fabric}. Secure the trim in place right next to the pillow’s existing seam. Allow the glue to dry overnight. Secure the trim and sweater, sewing with a needle and thread along the edge of the trim. This extra step of sewing, allows for extra durability for everyday use. Allow the pillow to dry at least 72 hours before washing of any sort. How lovely does this pillow look, I especially love how I can use both sides of it. It’s perfect for colder days, don’t you think?
