How To Safely Support Your Immune System

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

The immune system is an incredibly important part of your body. It protects you from harmful substances (like bacteria, toxins and viruses) that may make you ill. With such a vital role to play, keeping your immune system happy should be number one priority.

While there's no magical remedy that can boost your immune system, there are some small things that you can do to support it. This guide will take you through four ways to support immunity, and as a result, encourage normal bodily functions.

1. Maintain A Balanced Diet

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet helps to ensure that you're giving your body the nutrients it needs. A balanced diet can be achieved through:

  • Focusing on whole foods
  • Avoiding salty and fatty foods
  • Avoiding sugary foods
  • Avoiding processed foods
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Eating from all key food groups
What are the key food groups? 2. Get The Right Nutrients According to the NHS Eatwell Guide3. Sleep Well , the five key food groups are fruit and vegetables, starchy carbohydrates, dairy, protein, and unsaturated fats.

Your body relies on a whole series of essential nutrients to support various bodily functions. The same applies with your immune system.

Vitamin D, in particular, has been found to contribute to the normal function of the immune system. However, vitamin D mostly comes from the sun rather than through diet, making it harder to access. This is why many people choose to take a vitamin D3 supplement to safeguard their intake.

4. Stay Hygienic

Most of us need around 8 hours sleep per night to function normally. But, what you may not know, is that lack of sleep contributes to so much more than exhaustion.

As stated on an NHS 'sleep well' guide, prolonged lack of sleep can disrupt your immune system. When struggling with sleep, you may find yourself feeling more rundown and catching more bugs than usual.

With the above in mind, try your best to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. This can be achieved through sticking to a sleep schedule and limiting distractions.

Your immune system only has to fight back if it comes into contact with germs. You can support it by keeping these germs away as much as possible.

Maintaining good personal hygiene is the simplest way to prevent germs from entering your body. You can do this by:

  • Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water (for at least 20 seconds)
  • Using sanitizer when hand washing isn't accessible

It's important to wash your hands before cooking and eating. You should also wash them after coughing, sneezing, using the bathroom, and touching public surfaces.

Already Following These Points?

The human immune system is incredibly complex, meaning sometimes, it won't be able to fight off infection. However, if you are already following the above guidelines and frequently find yourself under the weather, consider visiting your doctor. There are hundreds of reasons as to why your immune system may be weaker than expected - it's best to get professional advice.
