How To Realistically Wear the Trends Seen on the Met Gala Red Carpet

By Bridgetteraes @BridgetteRaes

Met Gala Red CarpetThe swanky Met Gala eventwhich formally kicks off the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s yearly Costume Institute exhibit, draws in A-list celebrites, models, actors, and more.

With this year’s theme being “Punk: Chaos to Couture” one can only imagine how the celebrities would style themselves for such a theme.  Well, let’s just say they didn’t disappoint.  From heavy black makeup, odd hairstyles and punk-inspired gowns, all in attendance totally embraced the theme.

““Punk: Chaos to Couture, the museum’s big spring exhibition, will “highlight the origins of the punk movement and draw direct connections to haute couture and ready-to-wear creations that it has inspired for the past three decades,” Women’s Wear Daily reports.

Being the style expert that I am, I analyzed the Met Gala red carpet photos to see if I could identify any standout trends.  While there were quite a few, the three that stood out to me were Black & Gold, Cut-Outs and Embellishment.  Curious, I wanted to see if I could take these hot trends, that looked a bit outlandish on the red carpet and give you options on how you can embrace them in real life…unless you plan on hitting the red carpet soon, of course.  Remember, most trends start at the designer level.  If we’re seeing on the red carpet, they’re probably also at your local department stores.

Translating the black and gold red carpet trend to real life is an easy one.  You can grab your favorite black dress and wind a gold belt around it.  A gold tank would work great under a black blazer or you could even grab a gold clutch for an after five look.

Cut-out, also known as peek-a-boo fashion is very hot right now.  It’s not hard to get this look at mainstream stores.  For many of us, however, it isn’t likely that we’ll want to show off our muffin top with a cut-out slash over our waist or have a need for a plunging neckline.  Yet, with this trend developed at the mainstream level, it’s something you can easily find.  This trend is great if you want to show a little skin but still stay covered.  Here are some current pieces in the stores.  You can click the image for more shopping information.

Everything is embellished these days.  Like the gold trend, you can look for it as an all over trend and wear it as a dress or top.  However, to update something you already own, choose embellished accessories, like a beaded or feather handbag, embellished shoes or a top with small embellishment.  Here are some current looks in the store using embellishment.  Click the image for more shopping information.

As you can see, you can embellish your look a little or a lot, depending on your personal style and your event.  Embellishing doesn’t have to just be formal, either.  An embellished t-shirt, or small embellished details on pants or a skirt works too.

Met Gala Red Carpet- Just Wacky

Of course, I can’t write this blog post without showing some of the visually arresting and absolutely ridiculously over-the-top, I can’t look away, outfits worn at the Met Gala Red Carpet.  Some get an A+ for creativity and others should fire their stylist…<coughh Kim Kardashian cough>, sorry something must have gotten stuck in my throat.
