Today we’re going to go through the process of putting on a lace front wig. In my last tutorial, I showed how to install a wig with long, natural hair. Today, we’re going go over puting the wig on properly. I want to emphasize that this is the way I do it. It’s not the only way. By no means is it the right way, it’s just the way I do. With that said….Let’s jump into it.
HOW TO PUT ON A LACE FRONT WIG PROPERLY
WIG STOCKING CAP
I’m wearing a stocking cap today. You don’t have to; it’s totally optional. You can skip this step, but I do recommend it for people who have:
* long hair,
* a lot of hair,
* larger heads
It helps to keep you natural hair flat under wigs so that the unit lays flat as well. I also double up on my wig cap because, like I said, I do have a lot of hair. This ensures “ultimate flatness”.
WIG BAND / WIG GRIP
The next thing usually do is add my wig band. You can purchase a wig grip band for about $10 to $20. IT’S THE BEST MONEY I EVER SPEND. They are lifesavers! If you have:
* a lot of hair,
* hairline irritation, or
* issues with your wigs shifting
You should consider buying one. I honestly think that every wig lover should have at least one. You can wear with or without a stocking cap.
STYLE THE WIG
Once the unit is on, we need to go ahead and style. Comb it, brush it, fingercomb it. Depending on the length, texture, and curl pattern, you can have tons of options. Now, a couple of things can happen at this point. Let’s touch on them below.
– Fix A Shiny Synthetic Wig
You could find that it’s too shiny, and that’s when you would go in and add something to dull it down. I use the Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray. It’s easy and gives the unit a nice scent. You can also use baby powder, cornstarch, or nay dry shampoo you can find. Any will work.
– Fix Flyaways
Next is you may find that you have fly-aways or maybe you need to work on your bangs, and that’s when a hair spray will come into play. I use Aussie Instant Freeze. It works really well and FAST. You can get any kind of hairspray you like. Just be sure it has a long term hold.This is going to keep your hair in place the entire day so you don’t lose the style.
– Add Heat To Synthetic Wig
At this point, you may find yourself needing to add some heat to the unit. Be careful. You can damage synthetic wigs if not done properly. Make sure your unit is heat-safe. Always Start low and then work your way up. Any heating tool can be used to style the unit – flat-iron, curling wand, crimper, etc.
– Blending Your Part To Make It Natural
At this point, you’re ready to work on your part. To me, this is where you can make the unit look really natural by actually blending it with your skin tone. I’m going to end this tutorial here. You can check out the How to Blend Wigs and Make Them Look Natural tutorial next.
