How To Grow Email List Using Exit-Intent Popup?

First, you need to purchase the premium version of OptinMonster. If you check the pricing page, you could see four premium plans.

optinmonster pricing

  • Basic – $9/ month
  • Plus – $19/ month
  • Pro – $29/ month
  • Growth – $49/ month

You will need to choose the Pro or Growth plan for using the exit-intent technology. Once you have completed the purchase, you will be able to log in to your OptinMonster account, access the API information, and build new campaigns.

You will see a Create New Campaign button on the top right-hand side. You will need to click on that.

create new campaign

That’s how you can create new optin campaigns. They will show you all the available campaign types on the next page. As of today, there are five campaign types available.

campaign types

  • Popup
  • Floating Bar
  • Fullscreen
  • Inline
  • Slide-In

You can choose any type you need. For this tutorial, I will be using the popup campaign. Once you have selected the campaign types, you will have a chance to choose the optin template.

optin template

As you can see above, they have the filter option for sorting the templates. And on top of that, you can get a pre-made/ blank template from there. Pre-made templates can be edited and customized according to your needs. So choose a template from there.

After that, you need to name your campaign and select the website from the dropdown.

popup name

OptinMonster comes with a powerful drag and drop campaign editor.

You can edit the text, change the font, color, styling, or anything you would like. Once you have customized your popup campaign, we will need to set up some display rules. This is where we mention exit-intent for our campaign.

On the top menu, you will see a section called Display Rules. Select it.

optinmonster display rules

If you check the condition dropdown, you can see several display rules. From those, choose the exit-detected condition.

After choosing the condition, you will need to select the sensitivity. Now, you can see three sensitivity options there.

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High

exit intent sensitivity

Choose the High sensitivity if you need to target the users who hit the back button on their browser.

high sensitivity

You can always add multiple exit rules and sensitivity options. If you click on the + button, you can add a new rule. Once you have added the exit-intent rule with two different sensitivity, it will look like this:

different sensitivity

As you can imagine, this is a great way to properly track every action of your website visitors. So, the optin will get triggered according to our Medium sensitivity or High sensitivity.

Now, you can set up additional rules. For example, you can decide where you need to display the popup. From the rules dropdown, select the Current URL Path option.

current url path

You can mention the page you need to display the optin. We highly recommend you showing the optin on every page of your website. So, you will not miss any visitors.

any pages

And you are done!

Save and publish your campaign. So, you can use it on your WordPress blog or WooCommerce store. You are done with the OptinMonster builder. The next thing you need to do is, install the OptinMonster plugin on your WordPress site, verify it with an API key, turn the optin on.

NOTE: If you do not see the newly created optin in the frontend, it is due to the caching. Clear the cache and try again. Or, visit your web pages from a private window.
