Android devices are tricky! Not all manufacturers fit a unified model of how to manage applications. This becomes even more tricky when you need the app to continue running in the background while you’re out in the wilderness, soaking up nature and snapping those incredible vistas.
As a small team, we’ve done pretty well to handle the power demands of most manufacturers, but one – Huawei – has proven to be a special case where we cannot code our way to keeping the app running in the background. Therefore, as a Huawei device owner, you might be reading this thinking that it just doesn’t work on your handset.
But there is a way!
Follow these steps to stop your Huawei device from automatically shutting down the application while using other apps or when the screen is locked.
P.S. While this is directly related to Huawei devices, this may also relate to other Android devices.
Step 1
Open your device battery settings (Settings > Battery)
Step 2
Open the “App Launch” menu
Step 3
Search for HiiKER in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 4
Toggle the app management to off (left/grey). A small menu should appear.
Step 5
Toggle the Auto-launch to left/grey/off. This stops the app from launching automatically when the handset is powered on.
And that’s it!
Now you should be able to record hikes and download maps while you continue to use your smartphone elsewhere (or not at all).
Important: If the app is deleted and reinstalled, you will need to repeat this process.
