Fashion Foresight™ for New Year’s Eve
As I’ve mentioned numerous times I live by the rule of buy now wear later. But this wasn’t always the case.
It was New Year’s of last year, and I was so busy preparing the house for guests, cooking, setting up decorations and taking care of my baby, that I forgot to plan what I was going to wear.
5 minutes before my guests arrived I slapped on whatever I found clean, stuck a sequenced headband in my hair and I was good to go. I looked bad! I looked so bad, that I cropped most of the New Year’s photos to only show my face
I do this …. a lot. My closet may be filled with nice finds that I bought a year ago, but if I have no time to properly style them into an outfit what good are they?
The Key to Style is Styling!
The truth is, looking nice doesn’t mean having nice things, it means planning nice outifts. Fashion Bloggers, in the blogosphere, may take days or even weeks to perfectly execute an outfit. R real people don’t make that kind of time.
So I though I’d apply a little Fashion Foresight™ well in advance of New Year’s to present 4 outfit options and get your feedback.
The Dilemma
The goal of this post is to get me ready for New Year’s WITHOUT BUYING ANYTHING! And just to make things difficult, we’re hosting New Year’s Eve in our home to 3 families (6 other adults and 4 other kids), so I want to be dressy without being over dressed (so no short cocktail dresses or 6 inch spiked heels).
Outfit 1
Pencil Skirt + Peplum + Closed Toe Pumps
My first outfit is based on the basic elements of pencil skirt and a peplum top. I happen to have a hounstooth skirt, which was very “in” for fall (I wrote about it here and here). Houndstooth is still going strong in street wear styles, so I would feel totally stylish wearing it for New Year’s.

Here’s the look I created with things found in my closet. I photographed myself so I wouldn’t forget the combination I created, and then I created a hanger that included all elements including jewelry. This way, if I choose to wear this, even at the last minute, I’m all set!
Outfit 2
Pencil Skirt + Sweater + Statement Necklace + Closed Toe Pumps
My second outfit option is based around a trend I noticed at the end of October. I noticed in a high-fashion website that designers were pairing sweatshirts and sweaters with mid length pencil skirts. I really wanted to try this out with the 7 euro pleather pleated skirt I bought from Zara.Outfit Inspiration Board

Outfit 3
Pencil Skirt + Booties (or pumps) + Frills
I am a lucky girl because I have a nice belts and leather accessories because of the work I do, but any simple belt or bracelet will do. I’ve paired a crochet overlay collar I found online a few years ago with an pencil skirt and designer booties (I wrote about them here) with a faux pleather top to create a look based on this inspiration.

Here is a picture of the outfit hanger I created for this look. As I mentioned before, by creating outfit hangers I don’t need to think about what I’m going to wear, I can just grab the hanger and I’m good to go.Outfit 4

Luxe Inspiration Turns to Budget Manifestation
I LOVE DOING THIS! I look at what stars are wearing and what the most expensive shops are selling, and then see what’s in my closet to help me fake a look. On the blog I’ve done this here, when I faked a fall Miu Miu look with a thrifted skirt.
These New Year’s Eve looks are all based on 4 basic items that have been “IN” for a while and are still “IN” now. Most likely you will have some or all of these things already in your closet like me.
”In” Then & ”In” Now
1) Closed toe pumps with a slightly pointed toe. Simple, elegant, timeless, every woman needs a pair or has a pair.
2) A peplum dress or top. Peplums have been around for almost 2 years, if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon you can most likely find something in a thirft store because this trend is already over a year old!
3) Pencil Skirt. I own like 10, most people have at least 1 for office functions. Pencil skirts have been big for a long time, and will be continuing into spring and pre-fall.
4) Statement jewelery. A bejeweled necklace, earings or bracelet are all “in”.
These are my four New Year’s Eve outfits for everyday women and moms with what I had in my closet. Personally, I think they are pretty stylish considering I didn’t have to buy anything new. I also think all four would be ok to wear to a house NYE party without feeling overdressed or underdressed for the occasion.
Feel free to tell me which you like best and don’t forget that this is the last chance to enter the Reminiscence Giveaway for a $200 three string cuff by the Paris, France brand. Their jewelery is all exceptionally made and sold in the most exclusive boutiques, and perfume stores in Europe.
