Prepare: Have some trash bags or bins ready. Create piles clothes according to the category: Dresses, Jeans, Tops, Skirts, Sweaters, etc.
- Pick a category (e.g dresses, sweaters, skirts, etc.) and start assessing the items you have. It is a lengthy process but you have to do it. Divide them in the following piles
- Toss - If you haven’t worn in in the past year, or doesn’t fit you any more and you do not like it much it has to go. If it is in a good quality you can sell it or else it has to go.
- Maybe - If you like something but are not sure about it. If something is in great condition but requires a little alterations can go in this pile.
- Back in closet - Everything you wear frequently, all your investment pieces (leather jacket, LBD, etc.), the jeans that fit you well - they all can go back into your closet.
- Repeat this process for each category.
- Now its time to organize. Use this detox process to make your closet easily accessible and visually appealing.
- You can either organize the closet by color or by category. For example, if you choose to organize by category - dresses: Then you can organize the dresses further by the color. It sounds excessive and time consuming but once done will make your life so much easier.
- Do not hang the bulky items such as jeans and sweaters. Fold them up and use shelf riser or sections to store them.
- Use clear drawers to store your shoes, or label them for easy access. If you have the time you can also take pictures of the shoes and stick them in front of the box so you know what’s inside.
- Store your jewelry in clear boxes and hang the necklaces either on hooks or jewelry stands because unless you see it, you will probably not get to use them as much.
- Last but not the least organize your under garments so that they do not lose their shape and form. Preferably flat lay them, and stack them horizontally for easy access.
