How to Choose the Perfect Roof for You

Whether you're building a new home from scratch or renovating an existing structure, choosing the appropriate roof for a project can be a real conundrum. There are so many materials and styles to choose from that it's difficult to settle on one that you'll of course be stuck with for some time. When mulling over your options, remember the Three Fs: form, function, and feasibility. Thoroughly review your options in light of these considerations before making any final decision on your new roof.

Form

Aesthetics are often high on the list of priorities for home renovators who need a new roof. That's understandable since a roof can enhance the look of any home to a remarkable degree. You need to ultimately match materials with settings in this regard. For instance, slate is great in a northern climate but not so appropriate in a southern, humid one. Asphalt shingles are of course the default choice but not always the best one if you're shooting for something more upmarket.

Function

Beyond mere looks, there's always the question of functionality when choosing a roofing surface. Tile's great in the southwestern states but it's not superb in the northeast where being impervious to snow really counts. The choice of an appropriate roofing material depends quite a bit on the local climate conditions. Wood shingles actually make quite a bit of sense in specific circumstances. Ultimately, your choice of roofing material really comes down to what makes the most sense given your particular locality.

Feasibility

Last but not least, there's the little matter of practicality. Economics will ultimately determine what you can or can't do with your roof. The cheapest option will pretty much always be asphalt shingles, at least at the outset. However, long-term bargains can often be had with other roofing materials. Slate or tile is more costly but better with energy efficiency depending on where you live. The value proposition of your roof is a function of region in the end.

Making the Right Call

When you get down to it, the right roofing option is ultimately a very personal decision. That doesn't necessarily make it easier to pick one. If you're out of sorts and don't know which way to go, seek out expert advice on choosing the best roofing material for your specific scenario. Finding a roof that ticks all of the important boxes on your checklist isn't easy, but the search is well worth it in the end.
