Asphalt shingles are of course the default choice but not always the best one if you're shooting for something more upmarket.
Function
Beyond mere looks, there's always the question of functionality when choosing a roofing surface. Tile's great in the southwestern states but it's not superb in the northeast where being impervious to snow really counts. Slate or tile is more costly but better with energy efficiency depending on where you live. The value proposition of your roof is a function of region in the end.

When you get down to it, the right roofing option is ultimately a very personal decision. That doesn't necessarily make it easier to pick one. Finding a roof that ticks all of the important boxes on your checklist isn't easy, but the search is well worth it in the end.
