It is a sad fact that the majority of people will be affected by debt and stress at some point in their lives and that this can have a devastating effect on relationships. How are couples able to sustain a healthy, loving relationship in times of adversity? There are some simple tips and tricks to defusing some of modern life’s impact on couples.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Whilst it would be normal to think that working would be an added stress, it has been found that women working outside of the marital home has had the opposite effect. Women feel more fulfilled and the U.S. statistics show that divorce has fallen in America, where more married women work.
Where both partners work away from each other and have their own private space, they can actually be more fulfilled in their time together than those who live in each other’s pockets. Where couples have a sense of independence and self-reliance they can often communicate with each other better. Looking forward to seeing someone can bring a delicious sense of anticipation that both can enjoy. Nurturing friendships and hobbies outside of the relationship can be a good thing.
Communication and listening to what each other has to say is the key to making a success of a relationship. It is easy to go along pretending all is well but if a partner does not share their feelings, it can get to the point of being too late to do anything about a problem.
Get the balance right
It is said that for every action there is an equal and positive reaction. In a romantic partnership this should not be followed to the letter. An American writer, Tara Parker-Pope believes that for each negative interaction with a partner, an effort should be made to make five positive ones in its place to increase the partner’s sense of self-worth and indeed to make a conscious effort to be appreciative. It is easy to fall into the trap of always giving blame but never praise and this can be very destructive.

Budget together
Whilst it may sound dull, there is lots of evidence to suggest that a couple that budgets together and may need to scrimp and save feel that they are achieving something and are actually happier than those in the position of not having to think about money. Money is one of the biggest factors in rows between couples, so budgeting will also give a sense of security as long as both sides are honest. Saving up for a romantic holiday is a fun financial goal.
Romance is not dead
The physical side of a relationship should never be forgotten and couples would do well to spend some time setting the mood and getting back to the kissing couple they are likely to have been when they first met. Whilst spending time apart is important, not spending too much time apart is probably even more so! As the old adage goes, couples that play together, stay together.
