As soon as I pressed “play” on How Sad‘s new single, “Stockholm Syndrome”, off their forthcoming debut, Indian Summer, it became literally impossible for me to feel bad. Despite a weird headache and the back-and-forth of making weekend plans, I couldn’t help but smile as the song played. The track’s marriage of DIY vocals and synths over charming, almost oldies-style xylophone and piano accompaniment perfectly captures both the pop sensibility of summer and the quirkiness of a great indie rock song. Their sound is kind of like Dirty Beaches and Phoenix got together, and the result is stellar. Indian Summer drops August 6, just in time for us to enjoy How Sad all the way until the leaves change.
