October's here! The leaves are turning colors and it's getting chillier in the Netherlands.

As the season changes, so does the weather. And as the weather changes, so does your wardrobe and your travel plans.

Unfortunately, weather is a hit or miss in the Netherlands. No matter what time of year your visit. And, regardless of the time of year, there are a few things you should consider bringing along with you.

Rain is something we get a lot here, so make sure you have at least a travel-sized umbrella on you at all times. It can sometimes get very windy, so make sure you have a sturdy one that you're not particularly attached to should it not survive the storm.  You're likely to find more umbrella casualties strewn in garbage bins and bushes on rainy days than you are intact and in-use umbrellas.

A poncho is a good alternative as it folds into a compact package easy to carry around. It's also ideal if you plan on cycling.

Layers is also always a good thing. The weather in Amsterdam can change drastically at the drop of a hat. You may be scorching hot one minute and soaked and shivering the next.

This time of year a cardigan or other sweater is a great addition to your shirt and jacket. The scarves and hats are also coming out now that it's getting colder. Depending on how much time you plan to be outside, you may want to keep a pair of gloves on you as well.

As the weather can be exceptionally iffy this time of year, make sure you have alternatives if your plans revolve around outdoor activities. Museum and art gallery visits are great this time of year.

And if you plan to get around mostly on foot or by bike, make sure you dress warmly (even more layers!), are prepared for inclement weather, and have alternative transportation planned in case the weather is absolutely unbearable.
