How Law and Technology Combine to Promote Responsible Gun Use

Posted on the 15 June 2013 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

Gun ownership and gun use have been the subject of much discussion among those for and against it. Both groups provide valid reasons for their respective stands and it is really quite difficult to arrive with one firm stand considering the dangers of both having and not having access to guns. There are now efforts being exerted to combine law and technology to promote responsible gun use.

Gun Laws

Laws governing the sale, use, and possession of guns and ammunition vary depending on the  country or state where the owner is. The level of restriction will depend on the individual appreciation of lawmakers of its need. However, there are certain general similarities that are contained in existing gun laws all over the world.

Gun owners are typically required to obtain a permit or a license to purchase and posses firearms. These firearms are usually required to be registered with a specific law enforcement agency. Permits and licenses may allow either concealed carry or open carry of such firearms. Gun laws are generally instituted to promote order and control over gun use.

Gun Technology

Firearms are said to have originated from China sometime after the invention of the gun powder during the 9th century. Gun technology eventually found its way to the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. To say that it has come a long way both in location and level of technology is an understatement.

Firearms have become more and more technologically advanced through time. Developments in gun technology saw improvements in weight, size, design, loading speed, and safety features, among others. Even the purchase of firearm and ammunition has gone along with technological developments thus the existence of  options such as Ammunition Sales Online and Discount Gun Sales Online. As human society tries to find ways to curb violence associated with gun use including accidental discharge, the smart gun technology is being proposed as an answer.

Law and Technology for Responsible Gun Use

By his own admission, Rep. John Tierney draws inspiration from the James Bond movie “Skyfall” as he pushes for the bill known as The Personalized Handgun Safety Act of 2013. He says that that the same technology that saved Bond in the movie from being shot using his own gun can be applied in real life. This is essentially about incorporating bio-metric security features in guns. In essence, a smart gun can only be fired by a hand it recognizes primarily through the use of RFID chips.

It is not yet quite clear if the technology required already exists at this time. Reliability is also a major concern. This bill, if approved, is expected to affect the whole gun manufacturing industry.
