Most of us are aware of the fact the concept of 3-dimensional is not a recent craze, but has been in existence since its conception during the middle of 20th century. Modern developments made in computer graphics such as virtual reality have added more practicality and accessibility to 3D images. But behind all these things, the concept of holography has had a very important role to play.
Until recently, holo technology drives and holographic data discs were available only for research purposes. This is because they were quite expensive as well as clumsy to be used for commercial applications. However, modern improvements in cost reduction and availability of digital cameras, optical encoding substances and lasers have turned the entire story upside down. Now, we have holographic projection film, information disks, and so many other stuffs.
Modern 3D display technologies have become quite popular as well as practical not just in the field of computers, but also in other environments such as medical diagnostics, air traffic regulation, flight simulation, weather diagnostics, battlefield simulation, entertainment, education, advertising, animation, robotics, biomechanical studies and scientific visualisation. This increased distribution has taken place due to several factors. Availability of synthetic graphic images in print as well as on television has increased. We have holograms even on lenticular displays and our credit cards.
One of the most remarkable aspects of 3C technology that mankind has been able to make advancements in significantly is virtual reality. Optics and computer industries have developed better boom-mounted and stereoscopic helmet-mounted displays along with improved hardware and software for rendering scenes at qualities and rates required for producing illusions of reality. But, virtual reality journeys are encumbered and solitary at present. Users generally have to wear special glasses, helmets and other devices for viewing a 3-dimensional world visually. A common version of stereoscopic displays makes use of passively polarised or shuttered eyewear, which block 1 of 2 displayed images.
The next big thing that experts are trying to develop something that would allow multiple individuals to journey into virtual reality at the same time. Because current stereoscopic displays are incapable of projecting 3D images to multiple passers-by, a group or an entire audience. Some people may propose it can be achieved using identical projections, but that would require usage of underdeveloped technologies, which is again impractical. However, scientists have stated that it won’t be long before mankind can successfully develop such technology.
