How Does Your Skin Change as You Age?

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

You've probably heard of aging skin and all the product companies out there are talking about how their products will help fight and even reverse the sign of aging, leaving you feeling confident in yourself and beaming with beautiful, youthful-looking skin. But while you have probably heard phrases and slogans like this everywhere, have you ever stopped to ask what is actually happening when your skin ages?

Obviously, cells grow and die all the time, but surely that means your skin should be looking nice and new all the time? How does your skin actually change while you're aging? In today's post, we find out.

Don't Worry Until You're 40

Science shows that most signs of 'aging' skin actually only start to happen when you're around the age of 40. Of course, I'm not saying that they won't happen, or at least won't start to happen, before you get to this age, but it's around this age that you really want to start paying attention to how your skin is changing on its own.

Sure, if you've spent the last 20 years tanning all day and soaking up sun unprotected, then you're going to damage your skin earlier, so you need to be aware of how you're living your life. The point is to just be aware that even if you take great care of your skin, it's around the age of 40 where you'll really start to notice it changing.

The Epidermis Thins

The Epidermis is the outside part of your skin. If you touch the back of your hand right now, you're touching the epidermis, but of course, the skin is made of multiple layers that go into your body. If you cut yourself and you start bleeding, then you've cut through all the layers.

One thing to remember is that as you get older, your epidermis will naturally begin to thin, but, it's also important to note that the number of cells you have in your skin will always remain the same. You'll also find that the cells tend to become a lot more fragile, meaning the older you get, the easier it is for the skin to break, and the easier your skin will be to bruise.

This means when you're looking into using anti-aging products, you're looking for products that will strengthen your skin, or add a protective layer that will prevent it from being damaged. If you want to correct this, getting botox is also a very popular option.

The Sun Has More Effect

Since your skin is becoming thinner, you'll find that the effects of sun exposure become a lot more effective as you age. You'll start experiencing things like age spots, which are sometimes called liver spots, that will appear when you're exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. While not really dangerous, they will change the color of your skin and can be a sign you're spending too much time in direct sunlight.

Summary

As you can see, when you get older, the most problems you'll have comes from your skin becoming weaker and thinner with age. This is completely natural to happen, but if you look after yourself, you can reduce the effects this has and ensure you're looking like the happiest, healthiest, youngest version of yourself.
