While we were in New York City just before Christmas we splashed out on a little luxury at the Hotel Metro NYC.
Hotel Metro NYC Review
Located in midtown Manhattan not far from the Empire State building is this gorgeous hotel, greeting you with one of those lobby’s you expect to find in a movie. My first thought was ‘wow, I’m finally staying in one of those hotels with a fancy lobby’. I was impressed from the moment my eyes set sight on the glowing red sign on the edge of the building. The Christmas decorations helped to impress me, but even without them I could still imagine being wowed. We arrived late on Saturday night but were greeted by a friendly smile from the staff behind reception. As we gave our details she delighted us with news that our room had been upgraded, from our already swish premier queen (discounted at the time of booking) to an executive suite on the pent house floor. We couldn’t quite believe our luck but had yet another surprise waiting for us as we entered the room…. a bottle of bubbly!
I had chosen the Hotel Metro NYC for its location mostly but the final swing over other options was there 30% discount at the time of booking because we booked over six months in advance. We wanted something that would be a step up from the normal backpacker hostel/budget hotel and that would make our Christmas trip to the big apple a little bit special, Hotel Metro was certainly that.
The hotel is decorated throughout in the same old school style, everything was tasteful with the gold, red and white theme and beautiful pictures along the halls. The big lobby was welcoming with a doorman during the day and plenty of lounge seating for guests to gather around. Every stay at Hotel Metro NYC includes a continental breakfast which to my delight included a vast selection of bagels with cream cheese or butter. Other options included yoghurt, cereal, toast, bakery goods, fruit juice, tea and coffee. This is served in a lounge room with a variation of sofas, arm chairs and coffee tables as well as a few normal tables and chairs. We had breakfast at several different times of the day and despite it always being busy there was never a shortage of any food and we always found a spot to sit at.
Our upgraded executive suite located on the pent house floor was a front facing room with the most incredible view of the Empire State Building, which could easily be seen from the bed. Our bed was humungous and one of the comfiest beds I have ever slept in with big fluffy pillows and an even fluffier duvet. The room also had a large desk and chair, coffee making machine, iPod docking system, huge cable TV, refrigerator with soft drinks, wardrobe, safe, arm chairs and a huge bathroom with rain shower, jacuzzi bath and his and hers sinks with the most luxurious toiletries and plenty of towels. Unfortunately the jacuzzi system on the bath had not been used for a while a spat bits out at us, we called maintenance and within 10 minutes they were in our room running the system through and apologising a hundred times over. I couldn’t have been more impressed with the way they dealt with the problem. I could have spent all holiday in the room and probably not have been bored with it but due to our ever adventurous packed schedule for the weekend we didn’t really have enough time to enjoy it fully unlike at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore.
The other key features of the pent house level were a rooftop terrace and well equipped gym. The terrace had dazzling lights in the dark and plenty of space to sit and chill during the summer time. This also offers the best view of the Empire State Building however unfortunately the rooftop bar was closed (presumably for winter time) and left covered with huge sheets of blue tarpaulin. The gym was well equipped and although we didn’t use it, we did see several people working out proving the equipment worked well.
Hotel Metro NYC was the perfect location for a quick and action packed trip to Manhattan, it was easy to pop back during the day if we needed to and there were plenty of attractions within walking distance. The hotel staff were friendly and always with a smile; ready to help you if needed. The Christmas decorations filled the lobby and dazzled the outside canopy and inside lounge area. Compared to our normal backpacker hostel and budget hotel accommodation choices, this is definitely up there with best hotels I’ve ever stayed in and if you are looking for a hotel to splash out on, for a little luxury on a special New York City trip I would recommend the Hotel Metro NYC 100%.
Just a word of warning that hotels and hostels in New York City will need a card to place a hold on for your stay, this will take up to 10 days to clear and is best to be done on a credit card. We had totally forgotten about this and ended up having to put the hold on a debit card.
A stay at Hotel Metro NYC from the 20th – 23rd of December 2014 cost $696.76 USD/£453 which is equal to £151 per a night.
* Please note we paid for a stay in a premier queen room and I was not asked to write a review. I did however contact the hotel before hand to introduce myself and this may have influenced the upgrade.
