Homemade Filipino Maja Blanca Dessert Recipe

The year goes by so fast. sSme of our fellow Filipino netizens invented a different way of cooking the Maja Blanca Recipe such as by adding Langka (Jackfruit) to the original recipe while others add Cheese, Ube (Purple Yam) to put a twist on it and to make the taste more flavorful. 

It is relatively easy to prepare. A Coconut Milk (not Coconut Cream) and Cornstarch mixture is heated to boiling over a low flame while stirring.

Agar (Gulaman in Filipino) can be substituted for Cornstarch. Corn Kernels, milk, and sugar are also often added, though these are not traditionally part of the recipe.

Once the mixture thickens, it is then poured into serving dishes previously greased with coconut oil and allowed to cool. It is also often refrigerated and served cold to improve the texture.

Maja Blanca Recipe has the consistency of thick Gelatine and a delicate flavor and is creamy white in color.

As the name suggests, the dessert is of Spanish origin, adapted from the traditional holiday dessert, Manjar Blanco, and is thus related to other similar desserts such as Blancmange.

The name means “white delicacy” it  is also known as Maja Blanca con maíz when corn kernels are used in the preparation

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 4 cups coconut milk
  • 1 cup Nestle cream or light cream
  • cups white sugar
  • 3 cups evaporated or fresh milk
  • 1 cup diced cheese
  • 1 cup corn kernel

Instructions

  • In a Pot, Mix all the ingredients ( leave some corn and cheese for toppings later) mix well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved then cook over medium heat stirring well to avoid it from settling at the bottom of the pot.
  • Continue stirring until the mixture becomes firm, allow to simmer for a while before transferring to a molding tray.
  • Pour to container or molding tray then top with cheese and corn let cool and refrigerate before serving.
