Homemade Almond Powder in Plain and Chocolate Flavor for Kids

Today we will see how to prepare homemade almond powder for kids in two flavors: plain and chocolate. I will also tell you how to prepare almond milk with this powder.

Homemade almond powder and almond milk for toddlers and kids:

I started giving this almond milk for my toddler when he started asking for the regular tea we drink. The recipe almond powder and the almond milk will be liked by toddlers as I have added the favorite flavor of kids – chocolate in it.

Homemade almond powder step by step preparation method:

Blanch almonds for 3 minutes and drain by pouring normal cool water on it. Wipe or drain the excess water and peel almonds.

Roast the peeled almonds for 4 minutes to make it completely moisture free.

Once cooled well, powder all the ingredients in small batches for 25 sec precisely. This helps to get the correct texture and prevent release of oil from almonds.

Store in an air tight container.

To make the chocolate almond powder, add 1.5 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to half a cup of the prepared powder. Store in an air tight container.

  • Almonds – ½ cup
  • Lump or granulated sugar – ¼ cup
  • Cardamom powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Dry ginger powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Saffron – 4 strands
  • Water – 2.5 cups
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder – 1.5 tbsp for half cup almond powder (for chocolate almond powder)
Instructions
  1. Bring 2.5 cups of water to boiling point and switch off the flame
  2. Put almonds to this hot water for 2-3 min, not more than the specified time.
  3. Drain them and put them immediately to a pan of normal cool water
  4. Drain them completely using a colander
  5. Transfer and spread it to kitchen tissues or even a clean cotton cloth will do to absorb the excess water content
  6. Now just remove the skin from all the almonds by using your fingers. The skin will come off easily now
  7. Heat a wide pan or kadai on medium flame and lightly roast drained almonds for 3 to 4 min to make it completely water free
  8. Let it cool completely
  9. Grind and powder all the ingredients using mixie jar in batches. Please do not grind more than 25 sec each time to avoid overheating of mixie and to avoid the release of oil from almonds
  10. Allow the mixie to cool down, then again you can grind
  11. Allow it to cool completely and keep it in air tight container
  12. For chocolate almond powder, add 1.5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder to half cup of prepared almond powder and mix it nicely. Keep it in air tight container

Preparation of almond milk and chocolate almond milk: 
  1. Add 1 teaspoon of almond powder (plain powder or chocolate) to one cup of milk in a pan
  2. Bring it to boil on low flame and switch off the flame
  3. Close the pan and let it sit for 5-10 min
  4. Sieve it and add sweetener of your choice
  5. Serve it warm or even chilled

Notes:

  1. Sugar is added along with almonds while grinding to prevent clumping
  2. Please take care of your mixie while grinding. Don’t grind more than 25 sec to avoid overheating and to avoid the release of oil from almonds
  3. If you have flour mills in your place, you can powder almonds by giving over there in large quantity
  4. I used Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder
  5. Addition of cardamom powder, ginger powder and saffron strands are completely optional
  6. You can keep the almond powder in air tight container at room temperature or in refrigerator. I used to keep in refrigerator
  7. Use dry spoon to take almond powder to avoid solidification
  8. Daily a cup of almond milk is enough for toddlers. Don’t overfeed them
  9. You can add almond powder to your kid’s meal/cereals, gravies, cakes/cookies, milk shakes, smoothies etc
  10. Almond milk is not suggested for babies below one year old
