A Room of My Own
How do we recognize home when we see it?
I’ve been pondering this idea lately, trying to decide if I should look for a house to buy. That way I am investing in my own future, rather than adding to someone else’s nest egg.

Your Kiss Is On My List
So, I’ve decided there’s no harm in making a list of what I’d want.
If I could have the ideal home for me in an area that’s not too crowded or noisy, or so remote I’d become a hermit, I’d want
- A good-sized office with good light and room for a comfy reading chair
- Room for lots of books and lots of nooks and crannies for the cats to laze in
- A fenced backyard for the dog
- A nice spa (like the one I have now)
- Lots of light, at the end of a quiet street
- Desert landscaping (no grass anywhere)
- Close to stores, transportation, walking trails and a park
- Three to four bedrooms, two baths
- Hardwood floors or tile
- Privacy (no windows facing the street, or a barrier or fenced patio blocking the view)
- A screened porch for my (indoor) cats so they can continue to enjoy bird television, without hurting birds
- Storage and nice closets
- A clawfoot tub
However, I know that what makes a home my home, has nothing to do with any of the above. It has much more to do with my precious critters, with the family that nurtures me, and with the friends who spend time there. It has to do with the life I imagine living there: a life that’s good.
If we are adept at recognizing this, we can create a home wherever we are — whether we own or rent — or are just passing through.
Home is Where the Heart Is.
The house I currently rent has 75% of the qualities I want, so I am well on my way to finding the place I could happily hang my hat for the rest of my days.
I simply need a bit more space, if I can find the right one, and find one I can afford.
I am in no hurry. I’d rather continue to live in the peaceful little house I have, than move somewhere that isn’t the right fit for me.
Daydream Believer.
It is good to imagine the nest I want to build. It’s good to lay the foundation for it to materialize in my life.
After all, everything that exists in this wide world, started first as someone’s daydream.
