A leading international performance arts festival in the Netherlands, the Holland Festival will return to Amsterdam from 1 to 29 June 2014. The Festival has an illustrious history, with every artistic director taking it in new directions that have again and again made the Festival a renowned event for over sixty years. The Holland Festival is the trend-setting performing arts festival in the Netherlands since 1947, with a survey of the newest, best and most widely-acclaimed performance pieces from around the world.
Music theater and music are at the heart of the programme, with Western and non-Western art forms going hand in hand. Holland Festival offers a heady mix of theatre, music, dance, opera, film and visual arts. Besides the performing arts there is plenty of room for the visual arts, literature and architecture. All aspects, colours and flavours of aesthetics are given attention and elbow room. The festival has particularly been a frontrunner in supporting modern and non-classical contemporary music and new forms in musical theater.
Opening on 1 June 2014 with the dance performance Vortex Temporum by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Rosas and Ictus, the 67th Holland Festival will be the tenth and last edition under the artistic leadership of Pierre Audi. One of the most extensive editions in years, the 2014 programme includes ten theater productions, a rich and varied opera and music theater programme, has a special focus on the works of the Italian composer Luigi Nono, including four concerts, a two-day conference in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, lunchtime concerts and an exhibition. Highlights of this year's festival include a screening of Napoleon (1927) at the Ziggo Dome on Sunday, 15 June 2014: the epic silent film will be shown in full, complemented by a live symphonic soundtrack by Het Gelders Orkest. While one of the biggest spectacles of the festival will be a production of the acclaimed play War Horse at Royal Theatre Carre (performed in Dutch).
The Holland Festival presents a total of 56 productions, with 159 performances, concerts and events, spread over 29 days. The festival runs from 1 until 29 June 2014.
