Hog Shack Cook House is Steveston’s first and only BBQ joint! That’s probably the case because its Kansis City style BBQ wiped out/intimidated all competition. All of their meats are smoked in-house with rubs and sauces that are made on premise as well. Just walking in verified that very fact as a huge waft of barbecue aroma greeted us when we opened the door.

They offer a 100% Craft Beer brew list to pair with their dishes, so you won’t find any Heineken, Canadian or Coors Light. I wish I could’ve had some with my meal, but I’m the designated driver between hippoCHAN and I.

hippoCHAN was seriously malnourished after getting off work, so we tried to max out on meat. Our first dish was Smoked Brisket & Pulled Pork sharing a plate as the Smoke Lover’s Combo ($17). The brisket blanketed the pulled pork; that’s why I forgot to photograph it. Plus, hippoCHAN was about to pass out from hunger if I didn’t hurry up.

Man oh man oh man… This is the type of smoking that I can take up. The meat was incredibly tender, smokey and flavourful. It was the type of meat that assured me that I made the right choices in life, namely not being a vegetarian.

The combo came with two sides as well. We picked the coleslaw and yam fries. They were okay sides, but I really wished there was a fresh salad option – something fresh to break away from the heaviness of the dish.

Whenever it comes to ribs, my mind jumps to baby back. However, my friend Kiely (Paradise by the Oven Light) recommended the St. Louis Style Side Ribs that held more meat. Don’t even try eating these with a fork and knife. Use your caveman/cavewoman hands!

We had sauteed veggies and corn bread as sides for this dish. I appreciated the veggie variety, particularly the sweet beet. The corn bread was also really well prepared.

Final Bytes

  1. Apparently the Burnt Ends Poutine is phenomenal… *drool*
  2. Their pulled pork is the best I’ve ever had
  3. Free parking everywhere
