Hinds Explore the Messier Side of Being Feminine in ‘Easy’ [Video]

Being a female in the music industry is rough — so rough that every major music conference (CMJ, SXSW) hosts at least one panel addressing how to break through the glass ceiling. And the general consensus at these panels is always the same: assert yourself, prove you can do what most men can do, and most importantly, at whatever cost, avoid vulnerability. In Hinds’ new video for their track “Easy,” that advice is thrown that out the window.

Beginning the video with mascara running down all of their faces, the four females of the Spanish band only get messier as time goes on. In every shot there’s something new added to the mess: food is smeared across their faces, dicks are drawn on their foreheads. It’s a different kind of assertion, one that says “I’m vulnerable and I don’t mind what you think of it” rather than refusing to acknowledge that it’s normal for anyone to feel a mess sometimes. The lyrics “Now I know what it’s like to be afraid” are unabashedly personal, allowing you to feel the loss that runs through the song without hesitation. But most importantly, the end of the video shows the girls looking clean and brand new, leaving the viewer with the message that although they may feel hopeless sometimes, it’s temporary and doesn’t define them.
