We drove around Tobermory harbour, there must be a sign for it somewhere I thought. Struggling to find Highland Cottage we headed away from the harbour and all became very clear. This guesthouse is located up on the hill behind the harbour but the streets are not very well labelled. We found the guesthouse very easily once on the right road and parked right outside the front door.
We were welcomed warmly by Jo, she told us all about the area, things to do, where to eat, all about Balamory and more. She was the friendliest person but also super helpful. We were shown around the downstairs and the drawing room before finally our bed room. The whole place was grand and gorgeous but also a little dark and squished together.
Drawing Room
We were staying in the Staffa room: with four poster bed, sea views, ensuite bathroom and more. It was beautiful with so many antiques and little touches. It was like walking in to someone’s house. It really was lovely but I couldn’t help but feel it was a little dark and cramped. The room wasn’t as big as our accommodation two nights ago at the Cronlinnhe guesthouse and I really noticed the difference. This is being totally picky because I did love it, I just prefer uncluttered and light rooms.
We opted for dinner out that evening at the Macgochans Pub in Tobermory. Jo had suggested a sunset drive but we decided against that in the end, for favour of drinking. We enjoyed a little walk around Tobermory too, even if it was after all the shops had closed. We retired to bed pretty early after being absolutely stuffed from our dinner and all the driving we had done around Mull that day.
Our four poster bed was as awesome as I imagined and the room very cosy and romantic come darkness. I enjoyed a lovely power shower and wrapped up in the cosy dressing gown for the evening.
Up early for breakfast, we headed to the dining room and sat ourselves down. It took a few minutes for anyone to realise we were there. David introduced himself in a warm, friendly manner like his wife had the day before. He gave us a breakfast menu and left us to decide what we wanted. At that point we were the only ones down for breakfast, the menu was devine and it took me ages to decide what to have. Eventually others trickled in and I decided on yoghurt/fruit followed by poached egg and haddock – it sounded so fancy – the boyfriend went for scrambled egg and salmon. He definitely made the right choice, haddock is too much for breakfast… The food was gorgeous however and I could have sat for hours in the dining room enjoying the morning sun.
We checked out a while later, ready to explore the rest of Mull. David and Jo gave us a friendly goodbye, and couldn’t stop talking about what to see that morning and more. They really were the loveliest hosts ever, living in the property themselves too – it really is their livelihood and I think they do a brilliant job of it.
