Angel Olsen, the intimate grunge-country lady from St. Louis, sparks inspiration from the likes of Mazzy Star and Velvet Underground, but interprets these artists’ work without stomping on their parades. Having released her debut full-length album in 2012, titled Half Way Home, Olsen has reached a peak in her journey with the release of the single “Hi-Five”. Exploring the idea of finding happiness in loneliness, Olsen asks “Are you lonely too?” while offering a loud and proud “Hi-Five!” Her ability to speak to an audience in a deeply intimate and personal way is what makes her captivating. This is especially true when partnered with a David Lynch-esque video clip, which alternates between shots of Olsen dancing awkwardly, an often out-of-focus disco ball, and a tour through what looks like a film set storage room with a confetti covered floor.
