Herschel Walker and the Hollow Men

Dana Loesch may be best known as the former mouthpiece of the National Rifle Association. She now has her own talk radio program. Here’s her reaction to the allegation that abortion foe Herschel Walker paid to have his girlfriend abort her baby:

“These four words, ‘Winning.is.a.virtue’.  What I’m about to say is in no means a contradiction or a compromise of a principle.  And please keep in mind that I am concerned about one thing, and one thing only, at this point.  So, I don’t care if Herchel Walker paid to abort endangered baby eagles; I want control of the Senate.  If the Daily Beast story is true, you’re telling me Walker used his money to reportedly pay some skank for an abortion, and Warnock wants to use all of our moneys to pay a whole bunch of skanks for abortions.  And yes, when they’re used predominantly, over 99% of birth control and it’s my tax payer dollars, you have invited me up in your business and I will use whatever descript I would like to.  Thank you.”

Loesch has said the quiet part out loud.  Note her disdain for the woman who aborted her baby at Walker’s behest.  She is a “skank”.

If you aren’t familiar with the term, “skank” is street language for “prostitute”.  The term also refers to a promiscuous woman (never a man) of low moral character.  Synonyms include, “repulsive”, “nasty” and “sleazy”.  Not only does the woman Walker paid to abort his baby deserve the epithet, so do all women everywhere who seek an abortion.  So, there’s that.  The racist underbelly of this widespread perspective hardly needs comment.

Loesch suggests that faithful conservatives like her don’t care if Herschel Walker paid to have his girlfriend procure an abortion.  He’s their guy.  If elected, he will vote the way his handlers tell him to vote.  So, who cares what he really believes, or how he behaves?  It’s irrelevant!

In short, it’s all about power.  “I want control of the Senate” means, “I want to control the direction of the nation.”  It really doesn’t matter what the Senate does; so long as she, and people like her, are calling the shots.

This is what happens when politics becomes a team sport.  After a while, it’s all about winning.  Principle be damned. Which is why Loesch, and so many others, moved from heaping abuse on Donald Trump, to kissing his ring (and other items). He won.

But ask yourself, if Herschel Walker, a man who favors an abortion ban, has been exposed as a complete hypocrite; why should we believe that Dana Loesch, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ron DeSantis, and all the rest aren’t also hypocrites to the core?

Why should we believe that any of these people care about the unborn?

Why should we believe that, for any of these people, winning is the only virtue?

When there is literally nothing a member of the entertainment wing of the Republican Party can do to disgrace themselves, when they get a pass for everything from fomenting insurrection to the most blatant forms of hypocrisy imaginable, why should we believe there is any there, there?

T.S. Eliot springs to mind:

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us-if at all-not as lost
    Violent souls, but only
    As the hollow men
    The stuffed men.
