1. Electrical Lights or Lantern:

Lighting your house is a ritual during Diwali. Ensure that the electrical lights that you use are of good quality.

There should not be any loose wires hanging around. Preferably hang them at height where your kids can’t reach and plug them using an extension chord with proper earthing.

Children tend to pull any loose wires and this might result in a short circuit.

2. Diyas:

People staying in flats usually place diyas outside their door , window panes or balconies. Please ensure that there aren’t any combustible materials around.

If you have a toddler around, its better to keep these diyas out of their reach at an elevation. Ensure that the diyas placed outside the door have sufficient spacing so that children don’t bang in to them when running in and out of the house.

Avoid filling oil till the brim. This might cause unnecessary spilling and slippery floors.

3. Crackers:

It’s difficult to keep children away from crackers although each of know the side effects of crackers. If not keeping them completely away, we can definitely minimize the effects.

Make sure they are wearing closed footwear and close fitting clothes of thick material instead of loose or flowing garments while lighting fireworks.

Don’t buy them anything that you think is unsafe. Preferably when you go out to buy the crackers don’t take your kid along as he or she might ask for something from the display at the store.

You could surprise your kids early in Diwali with a few options like sparklers, chakras, fountains etc..

Keep the crackers safe and ensure that the child does not have access to it in your absence. Ensure that the crackers are lit only when there is some elder from the family around.

Keep a bucket of water handy just as a precaution.

4. Diwali Attire:

Diwali is the time when your child has the closest proximity to fire.

While shopping for your child ensure that you choose a fabric that’s not too synthetic or too thin. For girls a very frilly frock or skirt and for boys something like a silk shervani or suit like dresses are not advisable if they are outdoors most of the time.

You could buy something like the above for indoors (like during the Pooja). However for outdoor events ensure they are properly dressed from head to toe in fabric like jeans or cotton and wear proper footwear to avoid any accidents.

Make sure they are wearing closed footwear and close fitting clothes of thick material instead of loose or flowing attire while lighting fireworks.

For girls especially, tie up the hair and avoid accessories outdoors that would make them uncomfortable.

5. Sweets or Snacks:

Diwali is the time for all us to binge on sweets and snacks. This is applicable to the kids as well.

As far as possible keep them away from outside stuff. If you make them at home, nothing like it. If not then ensure that you pick these from the right store and also ensure that these are consumed in moderation.

6. Keep Them Around:

Right from cleaning the house , to decorating the house , making the sweets or snacks, making rangoli, performing pooja, bursting crackers.. ensure that your child is actively involved.

Give him or her small tasks so that they also enjoy the festivities. This indirectly will keep them around you all the time and ensure their safety.

Your child is the safest under your scrutiny. If you have friends and family coming together to celebrate Diwali ensure that there is a rotation amongst the elders to be with the children always.

These were my views to keep the festive spirit on and at the same time ensure complete safety of our little ones. A little care and a little precaution can make Diwali happy n safe for each of us.
