Tica Douglas has a way with melancholy, and so we find Neutral Milk Hotel’s gorgeously gloomy “Two-Headed Boy” is in capable hands here. While Jeff Mangum’s original is feverish and full of urgency, Tica’s cover takes on a more mournful and resigned stance and, being a bedroom recording, feels quite intimate. She’s slowed the instrumentation and, like a true NMH devotee, handles each phrase with the utmost caution, producing a reverent and tragically beautiful rendering.
